Stencil Wall Mural
description:
The Stencil has invaded the street and Artist has subverted the Stencil. Banksey is an example that street art can cross the boundary between Graffiti and the Gallery. Technology has also played a roll in the evolution of the stencil. Photoshop has an Adjustment named Threshold that can instantly transform an image into a 2 color (black & white, positive & negative) image.
process:
1 construct an image that will work both great as a stencil (is simple) & has some deeper meaning
2 when your image is finished, save a copy and flatten the image
3 Image --> Adjustments --> Threshold
4 save your image
5 have your image printed on heavy weight paper (use the print center in Clark)
6 tape your image to a piece of cardboard/heavy board and cut out EITHER the black or white
7 grab yourself some paint and a brush
8 dab away (a stabbing motion works best). when outdoors use spray paint and remember to wear gloves
whats due:
- your final images need to be uploaded to your Flickr account and sent to the Art216 group.
- your 4 images printed, ready to be cut on Wed May 6th
- 4 stencils cut out of cardboard ready for use on Fri May 8th
- showing up on friday
Things to consider?
What does it mean an image is simplified into positive and negative space and then painted onto a wall? What kind of image can you construct to create meaning about this interaction? What roll does the street play? or the people who pass by? What does the average person think about these images being put onto government buildings and private property?
Due: Wed May 6th at the beginning of class
On Friday May 8th we will stencil the wall for a couple of hours during the Hartwick Student Showcase. Participation is mandatory.
